RESUMO

Zelkova schneideriana is a fast-growing tree species endemic to China. Recent surveys and reports have highlighted a continued decline in its natural populations; therefore, it is included in the Red List of Threatened Species by The International Union for Conservation of Nature. A new variety "HenTianGao" (H) has been developed with smaller plant height, slow growth, and lower branching points. In this study, we attempted to understand the differences in plant height of Z. schneideriana (J) and its dwarf variety H. We determined the endogenous hormone content in the annual grafted branches of both J and H. J exhibited higher gibberellic acid (GA)-19 and trans-Zeatin (tZ) levels, whereas H had higher levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) catabolite 2-oxindole-3-acetic acid (OxIAA), IAA-Glu conjugate, and jasmonic acid (JA) (and its conjugate JA-Ile). The transcriptome comparison showed differential regulation of 20,944 genes enriched in growth and development, signaling, and metabolism-related pathways. The results show that the differential phytohormone level (IAA, JA, tZ, and GA) was consistent with the expression of the genes associated with their biosynthesis. The differences in relative OxIAA, IAA-Glu, GA19, trans-Zeatin, JA, and JA-Ile levels were linked to changes in respective signaling-related genes. We also observed significant differences in the expression of cell size, number, proliferation, cell wall biosynthesis, and remodeling-related genes in J and H. The differences in relative endogenous hormone levels, expression of biosynthesis, and signaling genes provide a theoretical basis for understanding the plant height differences in Z. schneideriana.

Prevalence of parasitic skin diseases, cutaneous leishmaniasis is very frequent in Pakistan, especially in Baluchistan where occurrence of phelbotomine sand flies (vector of protozoan parasite of genus Leishmania) is very common. This study was conducted to assess the antileishmaniasis activity of Intericutol plus ointment (2% and 3%) made with ethanolic extract of bark and leaves of Holoptelea integrifolia (Roxb.)Planch. The antileishmaniasis effect was observed by applying the ointments on the lesions of leishmaniasis patients. 150 patients were included in the study that had single and multiple painful wet and dry ulcerative lesions on the exposed area of the body. The patients were divided into two groups of 75 patients each, applying 2% and 3% ointment respectively for 28 days. Dose of 10gm/week was applied topically on wounds. Excellent antileishmaniasis effect was observed with significant quick healing properties in the patients receiving 3% Intericutol plus ointment as compare to 2% showing 89% and 81% cure (p=0.02) respectively. It can be concluded that ointment made from medicinal plant proved to be very effective in treating cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Large old trees, which provide ecosystem services and serve as a historical and cultural heritage, are exposed to various environmental threats, such as habitat fragmentation and climate change, necessitating diagnosis of tangible and intangible stresses and their effects on tree growth for effective management. This study investigated the photosynthetic characteristics of 25 large old Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino trees in Chungcheong Province, Korea, and identified the physical environmental factors affecting their physiological responses. Maximum assimilation rate (Amax) was the highest in July (summer), transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (gs) increased from May (spring) to September (fall), and water use efficiency (WUE) was the highest in May (spring) and decreased until September (fall). Amax decreased as tree height increased. Ambient CO2 and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were negatively correlated with photosynthetic parameters throughout the growth season and in July (summer) and September (fall), respectively. Physical environmental factors exhibited complex effect on physiological activities, which increased with wide growth space and decreased with deep soil covering and high impervious ground surface ratio. Physiological responses differed with surface types within the growth space, with bare land showing higher mean Amax, E, and gs than areas with mulching material or concrete. This study quantitatively determined the physiological activities of large old Z. serrata and proposes appropriate management measures for ensuring their healthy growth in abiotic stress environment.

RESUMO

Six new species from Crete belonging to the family Neanuridae are described and illustrated in detail. Friesea schulzi sp. nov. is characterized by having white body, 3 + 3 ocelli, 4 anal spines and furca and retinaculum absent (stage 5). Friesea cretensis sp. nov. can be easily identified by 5 + 5 ocelli, 4 anal spines and 6 microchaetae in furcal field. Characteristic and recognizable character of Pseudachorutella ellisi sp. nov. is very long buccal cone. Deutonura schulzi sp. nov. differs from other taxa in the genus in the presence of internal tooth on claw. Endonura zelkovae sp. nov. is especially distinctive due to the presence 3+s and 4+s chaetae De on Th. II and III. The main characteristics of Cryptonura ellisi sp. nov. include a massive mandibles and high number of mandibular teeth.

Contarinia ampelitsiae n. sp. Dorchin & Fazan is described as a newly discovered gall-midge species (Diptera: Cecidoymiidae) forming galls in flowers of Zelkova abelicea (Ulmaceae), a tree species endemic to the Mediterranean island of Crete (Greece). Larvae develop within modified filaments of male flowers, contrary to many Contarinia species that develop freely in flowers or in simple flower galls. The species has one generation per year, and its galls are sometimes found in great numbers on individual trees, thus affecting both fruit quantity and weight. This is the first report of a gall midge from Zelkova and the first record of Contarinia from Ulmaceae. Based on its host-plant association and on the barcoding section of the mtCOI gene, this species has no obvious relatives within Contarinia.

Hackberry (Celtis australis L.) is native to the Mediterranean region and is distributed in Europe, Turkey, North Africa, and Iran. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted on C. australis L. in the Arasbaran region, Iran. In the present study, total phenol (TP), flavonoid (TF), antioxidant capacity based on DPPH and FRAP assays and phenolic compounds and sugars profiles were investigated. According to the results, the range of antioxidant capacity based on DPPH and FRAP assays was 14.12-88.24% and 44.35-117.87 mg Fe2+/100 g, respectively. Also, the range of gallic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, p-coumaric acid, rosmaric acid, cinnamic acid, and apigenin content was 2.59-26.32, 2.03-9.32, 0.94-11.35, 1.80-4.857, 2.32-9.52, 4.74-51.38, 0.18-2.10 and 0.27-1.37 mg/g, respectively. The results of factor analysis showed that the C12, C14, C15, C20, C8, C16, C3, and C20 genotypes are positively characterized by the first principal component (PCA1) that have a higher caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, p-coumaric acid, rosmaric acid, quercetin, cinnamic acid, and apigenin phenolic compounds. Based on cluster analysis, the twenty genotypes were located in 2 main clusters. In general, the obtained results can be useful for breeding programs and the introduction of cultivars in Celtis australis L.

BACKGROUND: Ulmus mianzhuensis is an endemic tree species in China with high ornamental and economic value. Currently, little is known regarding its genomic architecture, phylogenetic position, or adaptive evolution. Here, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genome (cp genome) of U. mianzhuensis and further compared the variations in gene organization and structure within Ulmus species to define their genomic evolution, then reconstructed the phylogenomic relationship of 31 related Ulmus species to explore the systematic position of U. mianzhuensis and the utility of cp genome for resolving phylogenetics among Ulmus species. RESULTS: Our results revealed that all the Ulmus species exhibited a typical quadripartite structure, with a large single copy (LSC) region of 87,170 - 88,408 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,650 - 19,038 bp and an inverted repeat (IR) region of 26,288 - 26,546 bp. Within Ulmus species, gene structure and content of cp genomes were highly conserved, although slight variations were found in the boundary of SC/IR regions. Moreover, genome-wide sliding window analysis uncovered the variability of ndhC-trnV-UAC, ndhF-rpl32, and psbI-trnS-GCU were higher among 31 Ulmus that may be useful for the population genetics and potential DNA barcodes. Two genes (rps15 and atpF) were further detected under a positive selection of Ulmus species. Comparative phylogenetic analysis based on the cp genome and protein-coding genes revealed consistent topology that U. mianzhuensis is a sister group to U. parvifolia (sect. Microptelea) with a relatively low-level nucleotide variation of the cp genome. Additionally, our analyses also found that the traditional taxonomic system of five sections in Ulmus is not supported by the current phylogenomic topology with a nested evolutionary relationship between sections. CONCLUSIONS: Features of the cp genome length, GC content, organization, and gene order were highly conserved within Ulmus. Furthermore, molecular evidence from the low variation of the cp genome suggested that U. mianzhuensis should be merged into U. parvifolia and regarded as a subspecies of U. parvifolia. Overall, we demonstrated that the cp genome provides valuable information for understanding the genetic variation and phylogenetic relationship in Ulmus.

A new iso-benzofuranone propanamide: 3-(3-oxo-1, 3-dihydroisobenzofuran-1-yl) propanamide (zenkeramide) (1) along with three known compounds: Trans-N-coumaroyltyramine (2), ß-Sitosterol (3) and ß-sitosterol-3-0-ß-D-glucopyranoside (4) were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of the stem-bark of Celtis zenkeri Engl (Ulmaceae). The structure of the new compound was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The compounds were examined for Urease Inhibitory Activity. Compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate activities (IC50 values (µM) of 42.3 ± 0.19 and 45.2 ± 0.55, respectively), while compounds 3 and 4 were potent inhibitors of the Jack bean urease (IC50 values (µM) of 20.3 ± 0.37and 27.6 ± 0.52, respectively), when compared to the standard inhibitor (thiourea- IC50 21.5 ± 0.47). The isolation of all the compounds from C. zenkeri and the urease activity of compounds 1 and 2 are reported for the first time.

The stem bark of Holoptelea integrifolia (Roxb.) Planch. has been applied for the treatment of human cutaneous diseases as well as canine demodicosis in several countries. However, no detailed mechanistic studies have been reported to support their use. In this study, thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography were used to screen phytochemicals from the fresh stem bark extract of H. integrifolia. We found the two major bioactive compounds, friedelin and lupeol, and their activity on wound healing was further investigated in keratinocytes. Both bioactive compounds significantly reduced wound area and increased keratinocyte migration by increasing matrix metalloproteinases-9 production. Subsequently, we found that the mRNA gene expressions of cadherin 1 and desmoglobin 1 significantly decreased, whereas the gene expression involved in keratinocyte proliferation and homeostasis (keratin-17) increased in compound-treated human immortalized keratinocytes cells. The expression of inflammatory genes (cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase) and pro-inflammatory cytokine genes (tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6) was reduced by treatment with n-hexane extract of H. integrifolia and its bioactive compounds. Our results revealed that H. integrifolia extract and its bioactive compounds, friedelin and lupeol, exhibit wound-healing activity with anti-inflammatory properties, mediated by regulating the gene expression involved in skin re-epithelialization.

MAIN CONCLUSION: This study compared the plastomes of Ulmaceae allowing analyses of the dynamic evolution, including genome structure, codon usage bias, repeat sequences, molecular mutation rates, and phylogenetic inferences. Ulmaceae is a small family in the order Rosales. This family consists of seven genera, including Ulmus, Zelkova, Planera, Hemiptelea, Phyllostylon, Ampelocera, and Holoptelea. Ulmaceae is an interesting lineage from plant biogeographic, systematic, evolutionary, and paleobotanic perspectives. It is also a good model to investigate the evolution of the plastomes in woody plants. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the complete plastomes of the six Ulmaceae genera to compare genomic structures and reveal the molecular evolutionary patterns. The size of the quadripartite plastomes ranged from 158,290 bp to 161,886 bp. The genomes contained 131 genes, including 87 coding genes, 36 tRNA, and 8 rRNA. The gene number, gene content, and genomic structure were highly consistent among the Ulmaceae genera. Nine variable regions including ndhA intron, ndhF-rpl32, ycf1, psbK-trnS, rps16-trnQ, trnT-trnL, trnT-psbD, trnS-trnG, and rpl32-trnL, were identified in Ulmaceae plastomes according to the nucleotide diversity values. Condon usage was biased among the genes and showed consistent trends in the seven genera. Molecular evolution analyses revealed that most of the genes and all gene groups were under widespread purifying selection. Twelve genes (ccsA, matK, psbH, psbK, rbcL, rpl22, rpl32, rpoA, rps12, rps15, rps16, and ycf2) were under positive selection. Phylogenetic analyses supported that Ulmaceae should be divided into two main clades, such as the temperate clade, including Ulmus, Zelkova, Planera, and Hemiptelea and the tropical clade, including Phyllostylon, Ampelocera and Holoptelea. This study reports the structure and evolutionary characteristics of the Elm family. These new genomic data will benefit assessments of genomic evolution and provide information to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among Ulmaceae species.

In this study, the chloroplast (cp) genomes of Hemiptelea davidii, Ulmus parvifolia, Ulmus lamellosa, Ulmus castaneifolia, and Ulmus pumila 'zhonghuajinye' were spliced, assembled and annotated using the Illumina HiSeq PE150 sequencing platform, and then compared to the cp genomes of other Ulmus and Ulmaceae species. The results indicated that the cp genomes of the five sequenced species showed a typical tetrad structure with full lengths ranging from 159,113 to 160,388 bp. The large single copy (LSC), inverted repeat (IR), and small single copy (SSC) lengths were in the range of 87,736-88,466 bp, 26,317-26,622 bp and 18,485-19,024 bp, respectively. A total of 130-131 genes were annotated, including 85-86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and eight rRNA genes. The GC contents of the five species were similar, ranging from 35.30 to 35.62%. Besides, the GC content was different in different region and the GC content in IR region was the highest. A total of 64-133 single sequence repeat (SSR) loci were identified among all 21 Ulmaceae species. The (A)n and (T)n types of mononucleotide were highest in number, and the lengths were primarily distributed in 10-12 bp, with a clear AT preference. A branch-site model and a Bayes Empirical Bayes analysis indicated that the rps15 and rbcL had the positive selection sites. Besides, the analysis of mVISTA and sliding windows got a lot of hotspots such as trnH/psbA, rps16/trnQ, trnS/trnG, trnG/trnR and rpl32/trnL, which could be utilized as potential markers for the species identification and phylogeny reconstruction within Ulmus in the further studies. Moreover, the evolutionary tree of Ulmaceae species based on common protein genes, whole cp genome sequences and common genes in IR region of the 23 Ulmaceae species were constructed using the ML method. The results showed that these Ulmaceae species were divided into two branches, one that included Ulmus, Zelkova and Hemiptelea, among which Hemiptelea was the first to differentiate and one that included Celtis, Trema, Pteroceltis, Gironniera and Aphananthe. Besides, these variations found in this study could be used for the classification, identification and phylogenetic study of Ulmus species. Our study provided important genetic information to support further investigations into the phylogenetic development and adaptive evolution of Ulmus and Ulmaceae species.

The antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of crude ethanolic extract of Celtis iguanaea leaves and their active fractions are reported. The oral treatment with crude ethanolic extract (CEE; 100, 300 or 1000 mg/Kg) inhibited the number of writhings in a dose-dependent manner. The intermediate dose also inhibited formalin-induced nociception in both phases. The oral treatment with dichloromethane fraction (DF; 9 mg/Kg) produced antinociceptive effect in both phases of formalin test; however, the treatment with ethyl acetate fraction (EAF; 16 mg/Kg) reduced pain only in the second phase of this test. The oral treatments with CEE (300 mg/Kg) or DF (9 mg/Kg) reduced the nociception induced by capsaicin and pre-treatment with naloxone did not change these effects. The oral administration of CEE (300 mg/Kg), DF (9 mg/Kg) or ethyl EAF (16 mg/Kg) reduced ear edema, leukocytes migration and myeloperoxidase activity. Furthermore, the oral treatment with CEE (300 mg/Kg) or EAF (16 mg/Kg) reduced the level of Tumor Necrosis Factor - Alpha (TNF-α) in the pleurisy test. In conclusion, the DF showed antinociceptive activity that involves the vanilloid system as well as anti-inflammatory effect and the EAF showed anti-inflammatory activity involving the reduction of TNF-α cytokine.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a chronic male disease characterized by the enlarged prostate. Celtis chosenianaNakai (C. choseniana) is medicinally used to alleviate pain, gastric disease, and lung abscess. In this study, the effect of C. choseniana extract on BPH was investigated using testosterone-induced rats. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups: control, BPH (testosterone 5 mg·kg-1), Fina (finasteride 2 mg·kg-1), and C. choseniana (50 and 100 mg·kg-1). After four weeks of TP treatment with finasteride or C. choseniana, prostate weights and DHT levels were measured. In addition, the prostates were histopathologically examined and measured for protein kinase B (Akt)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)/AR signaling, proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy. Prostate weight and epithelial thickness were reduced in the C. choseniana groups compared with that in the BPH group. The extract of C. choseniana acted as a 5α reductase inhibitor, reducing DHT levels in the prostate. Furthermore, the extract of C. choseniana blocked the activation of p-Akt, nuclear NF-κB activation and reduced the expression of AR and PSA compared with BPH. Moreover, the expression of Bax, PARP-1, and p53 increased, while the expression of bcl-2 decreased. The present study demonstrated that C. choseniana extract alleviated testosterone-induced BPH by suppressing 5α reductase and Akt/NF-κB activation, reducing AR signaling and inducing apoptosis and autophagy in the prostate. These results suggested that C. choseniana probably contain potential herbal agents to alleviate BPH.

X-ray computed tomography (XCT), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were evaluated for imaging and element identification of woody plant roots. Lateral roots of Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata) were severed in spring and maintained in soil for six months. The lateral roots were observed using XCT without maceration and sectioning. The general wood characteristics were discernible to reveal the bark and xylem structures in contrast-inverted tomograms. Virtual sections showed a newly formed ring of woundwood encircling the severed lateral roots. FESEM exhibited secondary xylem structures in which tyloses, fungal hyphae, and aggregates were present. While silicon was dispersed in and around the fungal hyphae, calcium was localized as distinct aggregates using EDS. These results suggest that the combined use of XCT, FESEM, and EDS has merit into the morphological assessment of tree health care, providing virtual sections, high-resolution images, and element composition from an entire woodblock.

This study adopts a cellular automata model to generate simulation patterns (SPs) and experimental patterns (EPs) obtained from DNA lattices similar to the discrete horizontal brown-color line-like patterns on the bark of the Zelkova serrata tree, known as lenticels [observation patterns (OPs)]. SPs and EPs are generated through the implementation of six representative rules (i.e., R004, R105, R108, R110, R126, and R218) in three-input/one-output algorithmic logic gates. The EPs obtained through DNA algorithmic self-assembly are visualized by atomic force microscopy. Three different modules (A, B, and C) are introduced to analyze the similarities between the SPs, EPs, and OPs of Zelkova serrata lenticels. Each module has unique configurations with specific orientations allowing the calculation of the deviation of the SPs and the EPs with respect to the OPs within each module. The findings show that both the SP and the EP generated under R105 and R126 and analyzed with module B provide a higher similarity of Zelkova serrata lenticel-like patterns than the other four rules. This study provides a perspective regarding the use of DNA algorithmic self-assembly for the construction of various complex natural patterns.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a chronic male disease characterized by the enlarged prostate. Celtis chosenianaNakai (C. choseniana) is medicinally used to alleviate pain, gastric disease, and lung abscess. In this study, the effect of C. choseniana extract on BPH was investigated using testosterone-induced rats. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups: control, BPH (testosterone 5 mg·kg-1), Fina (finasteride 2 mg·kg-1), and C. choseniana (50 and 100 mg·kg-1). After four weeks of TP treatment with finasteride or C. choseniana, prostate weights and DHT levels were measured. In addition, the prostates were histopathologically examined and measured for protein kinase B (Akt)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)/AR signaling, proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy. Prostate weight and epithelial thickness were reduced in the C. choseniana groups compared with that in the BPH group. The extract of C. choseniana acted as a 5α reductase inhibitor, reducing DHT levels in the prostate. Furthermore, the extract of C. choseniana blocked the activation of p-Akt, nuclear NF-κB activation and reduced the expression of AR and PSA compared with BPH. Moreover, the expression of Bax, PARP-1, and p53 increased, while the expression of bcl-2 decreased. The present study demonstrated that C. choseniana extract alleviated testosterone-induced BPH by suppressing 5α reductase and Akt/NF-κB activation, reducing AR signaling and inducing apoptosis and autophagy in the prostate. These results suggested that C. choseniana probably contain potential herbal agents to alleviate BPH.

PREMISE: Celtis is the most species-rich genus of Cannabaceae, an economically important family. Celtis species have been described as wind-pollinated and andromonoecious. However, the andromonoecy of Celtis has been debated because there are reports of monoclinous flowers with non-opening anthers on short filaments. Our objective was to study the floral morphogenesis of Celtis to establish the breeding system and to better understand the developmental patterns that lead to the formation of reduced flowers in the genus. METHODS: Flowers and floral buds of Celtis species were studied using scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution x-ray computed tomography, and light microscopy. RESULTS: All flowers initiate stamens and carpels during early floral development, but either stamens or carpels abort during later stages. Thus, at anthesis, flowers are either functionally pistillate or functionally staminate. In pistillate flowers, stamens abort late and become staminodes with normal-looking anthers. These anthers have no functional endothecium and, in most of the species studied, produce no viable pollen grains. The gynoecium is pseudomonomerous, and its vascularization is similar in the sampled species. In staminate flowers, the gynoecium aborts early resulting in small pistillodes. No vestiges of petals were found. CONCLUSIONS: The species studied are monoecious and not andromonoecious as described earlier. The absence of petals, the carpel and stamen abortion, and the pseudomonomerous gynoecium result in the reduced flowers of Celtis species. The use of high-resolution x-ray computed tomography was essential for a more accurate interpretation of ovary vascularization, confirming the pseudomonomerous structure of the gynoecium.

We investigated the radiocaesium content of nine epiphytic foliose lichens species and the adjacent barks of Zelkova serrata (Ulmaceae, "Japanese elm") and Cerasus sp. (Rosaceae, "Cherry tree") at the boundary of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station six years after the accident in 2011. Caesium-137 activities per unit area (the 137Cs-inventory) were determined to compare radiocaesium retentions of lichens (65 specimens) and barks (44 specimens) under the same growth conditions. The 137Cs-inventory of lichens collected from Zelkova serrata and Cerasus sp. were respectively 7.9- and 3.8-times greater than the adjacent barks. Furthermore, we examined the radiocaesium distribution within these samples using autoradiography and on the surfaces with an electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA). Autoradiographic results showed strong local spotting and heterogeneous distributions of radioactivity in both the lichen and bark samples, although the intensities were lower in the barks. The electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that particulates with similar sizes and compositions were distributed on the surfaces of the samples. We therefore concluded that the lichens and barks could capture fine particles, including radiocaesium particles. In addition, radioactivity was distributed more towards the inwards of the lichen samples than the peripheries. This suggests that lichen can retain 137Cs that is chemically immobilised in particulates intracellularly, unlike bark.

Ginkgo acids (GAs) in ginkgo products usually lead to allergies or liver toxicity. In this study, the GA-induced toxicity was attenuated and Con A-induced T-lymphocyte proliferation was inhibited by extracts of Celtis sinensis leaves (ECSL). So, the active ingredients in ECSL were studied to solve the problems caused by GAs. First, the eight components of MeOH extracts were determined by HPLC-DAD/LC-MS. Then, the 12 active ingredients were separated based on the anti-inflammatory activity. Lymphocyte conversion showed that the inhibition rates of apigenin, quercetin, and isovitexin at 100 µM on Con A-activated proliferation of T cells were up to 82.46%, 62.86% and 42.76%, respectively. The inhibition rate on the LPS-induced NO release in RAW 264.7 cells of quercetin, apigenin, isovitexin, and vitexin were exceeding 80% at 100 µM. Taken together, the material foundation for the screen of GAs toxicity-attenuated ingredients were provided here. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ginkgo biloba extracts (EGBs) have been conducted to develop functional food which could increase blood circulation and enhance memory. Nevertheless, people in consumption of ginkgo products, often caused severe allergic reactions due to the potential allergens identified ginkgolic acids (GAs) of ginkgo products. We first find that the extracts of Celtis sinensis leaves can reduce GAs-induced damage on HepG2 liver cells. Then, the bioactive compounds in C. sinensis leaves were separated and purified based on anti-inflammatory activities against T cells. Quercetin, apigenin, and isovitexin showed well anti-inflammatory activities against Con A-activated T-lymphocytes and LPS activated RAW 264.7 macrophages. However, quercetin and apigenin are flavones O-glycosides which are rich in Ginkgo biloba. To solve the problems in Ginkgo biloba products caused by GAs, flavone C-glycoside (isovitexin) may be used for the further study in GAs toxicity-reduction.

PREMISE: Seed dispersal is extremely important for the recovery and restoration of forest communities. Relict tree genus Zelkova possesses a unique dispersal mechanism: mature fruits fall with the entire twig, and the dried leaves that are still attached function as a drag-enhancing appendage, carrying the fruits away from the parent tree. This singular adaptation has never been investigated in Z. abelicea. METHODS: Drop tests with dispersal units and individual fruits of Z. abelicea were performed in controlled conditions to measure their dispersal velocity and to define their flight mode. RESULTS: Zelkova abelicea uses both slowly falling dispersal units with chaotic motion, as well as fast falling individual fruits using a straight path. The falling velocity of Z. abelicea dispersal units is 1.53 m s-1 , which is virtually identical to that of the East Asiatic Z. serrata (1.51 m s-1 ). In contrast, the falling velocity of individual fruits was 2.74 m s-1 (Z. serrata: 5.36 m s-1 ). CONCLUSIONS: Members of the genus Zelkova, growing today in distant regions, show remarkable evolutionary conservation of the velocity and flight mechanics of their dispersal units. This is surprising because the Mediterranean and East Asiatic Zelkova species have been separated at least 15-20 mya. Zelkova abelicea, although growing in the Mediterranean with completely different forest structure and composition, still uses the same dispersal mechanism. The dispersal capacity of the genus Zelkova is less efficient than that of other wind dispersed trees, and it presumably evolved for short-distance ecological spread and not for long-distance biogeographical dispersal.
